Samuel Beckett’s play “Waiting for Godot” is set in the backdrop of the class struggle of man, fight against exploitation, and endless exhaustion of the post-World War II. The play has been directed by professor Dr Israfil Shaheen and translated by Asadul Islam in collaboration with the Academy of Arts.

Theatre and Performance Studies department of Dhaka University staged an enthralling Macbeth, the famous Shakespearean tragedy, to the delight of the audience. A concerted effort by teachers and students of the department, Macbeth, which is scheduled to participate at the upcoming Bharat Rang Mahotsab in India in February, hit the stage on Monday at Natmandol. The play, translated by late eminent poet-playwright Syed Shamsul Haq and directed by Israfil Shahin, was staged by MA students with help of students from other batches.
Panjare Chandraban

Department of Theatre and Performance Studies of the University of Dhaka have come up with its new artistic venture Panjore Chandroban (Lunatic Asylum) that is written by Shahman Moishan and directed by Professor Dr. Israfil Shaheen. Panjore Chandraban entails new narrative of violence infested global realities along with the eternal search for the beauty of living in milieu of homelessness.

Jean Racine’s classical French play titled Phaedra translated by Asit Kumer to be presented by the Theatre and Performance Studies Department of Dhaka University in the festival. Under the direction of senior Professor of the department Dr Israfil Shaheen MA (Final) students will act in the play.
Measures Taken
Playwright: Bertolt Brecht | Director: Dr. Israfil Shaheen
Shiddhanto, an adaptation of German playwright Bertolt Brecht’s The Measures Taken, produced by Department of Theatre, University of Dhaka will participate in a festival arranged by National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi, India. The play, translated by Shahman Moishan and directed by Professor Israfil Shaheen, will be staged at the 15th Bharat Ranga Mahotsab on January 10.

William Shakespear’s play titled Romeo and Juliet, directed by Israfil Shaheen, is to be presented by the Theatre and Performance Studies Department of Dhaka University in the festival. An age-old vendetta between two powerful families erupts into bloodshed. A group of masked Montagues risk further conflict by gatecrashing a Capulet party. A young lovesick Romeo Montague falls instantly in love with Juliet Capulet, who is due to marry her father’s choice, the County Paris.
